A Gift that Keeps Giving: Tacoma Art Museum Receives 280 Works of American Western Art

The Tacoma Art Museum recently announced a major donation by Erivan and Helga Haub and family of 280 major works of American Western Art along with a contribution for a new 15,000 square foot gallery and lobby expansion to house the collection, as well as endowment funds for the care of the collection.

This significant donation of iconic works will transform Tacoma Art Museum into one of the leading museums in the country featuring American Western Art.

Post Def Nerdery: Pint Defiance

As some of you may or may not know, local heroes Barry and Renee Watson will, this fall, open Pint Defiance, a new specialty beer and taproom over by Tacoma Community College.

The Great Grizzly Escape

75 years ago, a grizzly bear was on the loose in Tacoma. The 600 pound bear escaped from his cage never to be found and how he escaped is still a mystery today. His successor, a bear named Butch, also escaped, but was recaptured when his stomach betrayed him after almost three weeks on the lam. Zoos serve an important purpose, but we can’t help but love a good animal escape story!

From Cult Tacoma: Kevin Sur + Passenger String Quartet

Tacoma’s summer stage was set—fathomless blue sky slowly melting toward the West into a cocktail of red and orange. The perfect backdrop for a live performance.

Equality Fair

The first self-evident truth listed in the Declaration of Independence is this: “All men are created equal”. That’s the first thing we said when we wrote our letter to the King of England. We followed it by saying that equal men have inalienable rights: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Our rights as Americans are based upon equality. Freedom means nothing if it is not shared equally by all citizens.

So why don’t we celebrate equality? It’s an easy concept – much easier and less fraught with ethical complexities than the concept of freedom. No one is better than anyone else. We have the right to equal access and equal protection under the law.
