You’ll love Tacoma
A story, a dance, a dame, and some attitude. This Valentine’s Day saw us marching through the city to find out what it means to be in love with Tacoma.
Fashion Director: Ricky German, Style Editor and Photographer: Kali Raisl
A little brains, a little talent
A book can be a portal to a new world, or a new beginning. Tasha Church, Director of Vibrant Schools Tacoma Coalition wears a Chelsia Berry dress and Marla German crystal necklace, prices upon request. Accordion-playing boyfriend Ryland Doran woos her at the Artist Craft Fair, presented by Tacoma Is For Lovers, at King’s Bookstore. Book: Cress by Marissa Meyer. Makeup: Rachel Ervin Artistry.
The weather outside is the weather
A brief snow covers everything to make a powder white stage for two in Wright Park. Katie Lappier, Associate Director of Education at the Broadway Center for Performing Arts, and her photographer husband Gary Lappier perform a comic pas de deux. Gary’s own show, Sent From Somewhere Else, opens at Fulcrum Gallery on March 14. They both wear shirts from Tacoma is For Lovers. Katie’s coat by Chelsia Berry.
We were all so excited to see singer/songwriter Stephanie Anne Johnson compete on The Voice. She reminded us what Tacoma sounds like: fierce and gritty. She and boyfriend, NWCZ Radio engineer David Hansen, channel a fierce and gritty Tacoma from the past. Maybe the spirit of Klondike Kate never really left. Costumes: Northwest Costume. Makeup: Athena Renee Artistry.
And I am telling you
Glamour is a visceral knowledge of one’s own power, and using that power to shape one’s surroundings. Renee Simms, Writer and African American Studies Professor; Nick Spencer, Patron Services Manager at Tacoma Symphony Orchestra; and April Nyquist, Assistant Education Manager at the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts and The BareFoot Collective, come together as the Under Currents, a girl group with a new sound. Gowns: The Wedding Bell. Makeup: Athena Renee Artistry.
